Energy Solutions Engineering Laboratory
Hanford Area
Fowler managed the facility design and construction starting with the initial facility construction. Fowler has led the subsequent design and equipment installations of all of the test equipment and infrastructure. Fowler has also supported Energy Solutions/ATKINS with the Large Scale Integrated Testing operations with facility and maintenance support.
Fowler lead a Design/Build team for the 13,000 sq/ft laboratory in Richland owned by Washington State University. Energy Solutions/ATKINS donated the building to WSU Tri-Cities and currently operates the facility to test high risk technology for Hanford’s Waste Treatment Facility and other missions. The building is comprised of 10,000 sq/ft of laboratory space and 3,000 sq/ft of office space. The building features a high-bay that can accommodate testing assemblies including large tanks and steel supporting structures. The testing involved use of non-radioactive waste simulants.
Design/Build of the Large Scale Integrated Test infrastructure, which included the structural steel platform for the 14’ vessel and associated electrical, mechanical, material handling and I&C system.
Design/Build of 90’ tall Control Tower which housed equipment and controls for the Large Scale Integrated Test.
Design/Build of the RLD-8T Vessel test configuration. The facility was later modified to accept a different, larger vessel for testing. The structural platform, mechanical and electrical/I&C systems were modified support the larger vessel configuration.
Design/Build of the facility re-configuration to accommodate testing of the SVHD system.
